DragonBITE™1 (DB1) Drill Shoe

pdfView PDF Version

The Caledus DragonBITE™1 (DB1) Drill Shoe is a new generation drilling with casing drill shoe designed to drill very soft formations at high rates of penetration. The DB1 drills in much the same manner as a PDC drill bit, except that the casing string takes the place of the drill string and BHA. The DB1 has a two-part construction; the main body is manufactured from forged steel whilst the nose portion is Aluminium. The cutting structure comprises high density Tungsten Carbide sprayfused to the faces of drillable Aluminium blades. The design ensures that the DragonBITE™1 Drill Shoe can be drilled-out quickly and efficiently with either a PDC or roller cone bit or another DragonBITE™ shoe.

The main body has the casing box connection facing up. Large waterways between the blades maximise the junk-slot area eliminating surge and swab issues while tripping. The wide gauge pad construction ensures good stabilisation of the cutting structure, thereby minimising the possibility of vibration and damage. The body has a drift diameter larger than the next drill bit size to ensure that no hard material needs to be drilled-up.

The Aluminium nose carries the Tungsten Carbide cutting structure on high profiled blades to maximise the rate of penetration. The blade face is protected from fluid erosion by a high density Tungsten Carbide coating. Drillable nozzles are fitted to provide the optimum combination of cleaning and cooling to the cutting structure. The nozzles are coated with an erosion resistant Ceramic which permits high flow rates and pressure drops. A wide variety of Total Flow Areas (TFA) is available through selection of a range of nozzle sizes.

The nose is fixed to the body by a high-strength connection and locked in place using a compound designed to resist the stresses imposed during drilling and when the DB1 itself is being drilled.

Features:-

  • Cutting structure high density spray-fused Tungsten Carbide.
  • Can be drilled-out quickly and efficiently with either PDC, roller cone drill or another DragonBITE™ shoe.
  • Available in most standard casing/liner versus open-hole combinations.

DragonBITE™2 (DB2) Drill Shoe

The Caledus DragonBITE™2 (DB2) Drill Shoe is a new generation diamond drilling with casing drill shoe designed to drill soft to medium-soft formations at high rates of penetration. The DB2 drills in much the same manner as a PDC drill bit, except that the casing string takes the place of the drill string and BHA. The DB2 has a two-part construction; the main body is manufactured from forged steel whilst the nose portion is aircraft-grade aluminium. The cutting structure comprises conventional PDC cutters and thermally-stable polycrystalline diamond (TSP) inserts. The design ensures that the Dragon- BITE™2 Drill Shoe can be drilled-out quickly and efficiently with either a PDC or roller cone bit or another DB2.

The main body has the casing box connection facing up. Large waterways between the blades maximise the junk-slot area eliminating surge and swab issues while tripping. The spiral blade construction provides 360º coverage of the open-hole wall thereby ensuring excellent stabilization of the cutting structure and minimising the possibility of vibration and damage. High wear resistance PDC cutters and gauge trimmers are strategically positioned to maintain full gauge drilled diameter. The body has a drift diameter larger than the next drill bit size to ensure that no hard material needs to be drilled-up. The high-strength aluminium nose carries the TSP diamond cutters on high profiled blades to maximise the rate of penetration.

The nose is fixed to the body by a high-strength connection and locked in place using a compound designed to resist the stresses imposed during drilling and when the DB2 itself is being drilled.

Features:-

  • Cutting structure comprises conventional PDC cutters and thermally-stable polycrystalline diamond (TSP) inserts.
  • Can be drilled-out quickly and efficiently with either PDC, roller cone drill or another DB2 shoe.
  • Available in most standard casing/liner versus open-hole combinations.

DragonBITE™3 (DB3) Drill Shoe

The Caledus DragonBITE™3 (DB3) Drill Shoe is a new generation “full-face” diamond drilling with casing drill shoe designed to drill 'PDC-drillable' formations at high rates of penetration. The DB3 drills in much the same manner as a PDC drill bit, except that the casing string takes the place of the drill string and BHA. The CD3 has a two-part construction; the main body is manufactured from a proprietary drillable alloy whilst the bit sub portion is oilfield grade AISI 4140/4145. The two parts are connected by a premium casing thread and are locked in place using a compound designed to resist the stresses imposed during drilling and when the DB3 itself is being drilled out. The DB3 is best drilled out with a heavy-set PDC bit or an insert type rock-bit.

The cutting structure comprises premium grade PDC face cutters and pre-flattened PDC gauge cutters mounted on multiple blades. The blade height has been chosen to provide good ROP, yet minimise difficulties whilst drilling out. The spiral blade construction provides good coverage of the open-hole wall thereby ensuring excellent stabilization of the cutting structure and minimising the possibility of vibration and damage. Each gauge pad is fitted with tungsten carbide inserts to help keep the bit in gauge throughout its life.

Large waterways between the blades maximise the junk-slot area eliminating surge and swab issues while tripping. Interchangeable drillable nozzles are fitted to provide the optimum combination of cleaning and cooling to the cutting structure. The nozzles are coated with an erosion resistant ceramic which permits high flow rates and pressure drops. A wide variety of Total Flow Areas (TFA) is available through selection of a range of nozzle sizes. Optionally, where applications require, the blades are coated with an erosion resistant tungsten carbide coating.

The DB3 is normally provided with a premium box casing thread ready for connection to the casing string, but can be provided blank or with a weld-prep finish if required. The DB3 has a drift diameter larger than the next drill bit size to ensure that no hard materials need to be drilled-up.

Features:-

  • Cutting structure comprises premium grade PDC and pre-flattened gauge cutters.
  • Can be drilled out with a heavy-set PDC bit or an insert type rock-bit.
  • Available in most standard casing/liner versus open-hole combinations.
